Hebridean sunset

Lewis and Harris were named Europe’s top island destination by Trip Advisor, but they weren’t telling us, as locals, anything we didn’t already know. Our islands of Lewis and Harris also beat off competition from tropical rivals to be voted among the top five islands in the world. Here we are on your doorstep, a part of the British Isles. An hour’s flight from Glasgow International Airport then you’re almost home.

Stornoway is the main town in the Outer Hebrides and although small it has everything needed for those seeking a bit of retail therapy.  Oh! The town centre is only a ten-minute walk from Vancouver House, as is the Sports Centre, Swimming Pool and local supermarket.  The ferry terminal is also within walking distance although if you have luggage it would be better to get a taxi. The airport is less than a ten-minute drive away.

If you plan on touring the islands then Stornoway is the ideal base. You can visit the famous white sand beaches of Lewis and Harris, archaeological sites are around almost every bend, from standing stones to Norse kilns and a touch of all that’s in between. On a landscape that is timeless it is easy to feel at one with the ancestors.

Surfing, kayaking, hill walking and bird watching bring visitors from around the world. We have a multitude of different birds, either resident or migratory including Sea Eagles, Golden Eagles, and Corncrakes.  Wildlife is in abundance go on a guided walk looking for Otters, Seals, some can be found in the harbour. Red Deer are a common site in the early morning.  There are Whales, Dolphins and Basking Sharks just off the coast.  A fifteen-minute drive will take you from Vancouver House to one of the best ‘spotting’ areas on the Island, Tiumpan Head Lighthouse.

Staying in Stornoway gives you the best of what the islands have to offer yet you can still enjoy the social life of the town and walk home.
